A look ahead

Week 1 of the 2008 season is in the books, and the results were the same as they are every year: perennially bad teams start out hot (Baltimore Orioles; 4-1) and division favorites stumble out of the gate (Detroit Tigers 0-6). But it’s early, the statistics are out of whack, and roster spots are yet to be won and lost.

The excitement of the new season will inevitably fade like a small market team’s playoff hopes, but each Sunday I’ll do my best to keep you focused on the week ahead by highlighting an especially bad matchup. This week’s special finds the Florida Marlins (3-3) heading north to take on the Washington Nationals (3-4). Pay special attention to Thursday night when both teams send their “aces” to the mound, and remember that both pitchers were actually opening day starters. For the Fish it’ll be Mark Hendrickson (1-1, 6.10 ERA), taking on Odalis Perez (0-1, 6.00 ERA) for the Nats. Hey – somebody has to win!
