The first one bites the dust

Manny Corpas is out as Rockies closer. Three consecutive blown save opportunities (and 4 total on the year) did him in. Brian Fuentes , who had previously lost this role in June of 07 to Corpas, will take over ninth inning duties.

Corpas was fairly dominant in 2007, notching 18 saves and finishing with a 2.08 ERA. That wasn't the case with Fuentes, who blew 7 save chances and recorded 5 losses. Neither seem to be long term solutions, and I wouldn't be surprised to see the two change roles again should Fuentes falter.

In other Bad Baseball news from Thursday night...
The Twins should've thought a little harder about making an effort to resign Johan Santana or to keep some of the guys they sent to the Rays this past off season; Francisco Liriano, still apparently recovering from Tommy John surgery, lasted just two-thirds of an inning in his start against the Oakland A's. He was pulled after getting hammered for 6 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks, making his 2008 ERA jump to 11.32. It was his third loss of the season.
